Church planning to honour five young RAF men among war dead

Lowe Memorial Presbyterian Church in Finaghy is spreading its net wide in search of relatives of five young men to whom tribute will be paid on Sunday, November 17, at 7pm.

A Memorial Record is now planned as an attempt to perpetuate and personalise the memory of the five young men.

All five were members of the Royal Air Force.

A warm invitation is being extended to all who may be related or who are interested in the dedicatio.

The five, whose names are inscribed on the Roll of Honour in the church, will also be included in a special Memorial Record to perpetuate their memory.

Harold Christopher Moorby (31) was a RAF Sergeant killed in Wales, on January 19, 1940.

His remains were interred after a formal RAF funeral on January 25 at Knockbreda Churchyard.

Thomas (Tom) Patterson is believed to be from Eglantine, Hillsborough and was killed in action on January 30, 1943 in North Africa.

He is remembered on a memorial at El Alamein in Egypt and in Main Street, Hillsborough.

Thomas George (Tom) Rodgers from Orpen Road, Finaghy was a Flying Officer when he was killed, aged 25, on August 8, 1943.

He was killed off the coast of Scotland in a tragic flying collision with an aircraft from a Norwegian squadron.

Walter Thompson, a sergeant, was only 20 years old when he was killed in action off the coast of Holland on June 5, 1942.

He is remembered on the Memorial at Bergen-up-Zoom, Antwerp in Belgium.

William John (Jack) Wallace was killed in action over Burma when he was 32 on Janaury 23, 1945.

Jack is buried at Imphal War Cemetery in North India.
