City has just 10% Belfast’s civil service jobs but is nearly half its population

LONDONDERRY has just 10 per cent (1,606) of Belfast’s complement (15,472) of civil service jobs despite being 40 per cent its size in population terms.

The Foyle constituency accounts for just 6 per cent of Northern Ireland’s 26,359 civil service posts, the Finance Minister Sammy Wilson has revealed.

The figures above refer to the four Belfast constituencies of North, South, East and West and to the Foyle constituency which mirrors the Derry City Council area.

The data was sourced from Government databases at Apr 1, 2011 and comprise headcounts for staff working in the 13 Northern Ireland Departments and civil servants working in the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland, the Office of the Attorney General for Northern Ireland, and staff of The Assembly Ombudsman for Northern Ireland/The Northern Ireland Commissioner for Complaints.
