City hosts EU energy convention

DELEGATES from six European cities striving to cut energy consumption and reduce their respective carbon footprints will convene in Londonderry for a two day conference today Thursday, March 11, and tomorrow.

Derry City Council and the Northern Ireland Energy Agency (NIEA) are this week hosting the 4th European Partner Meeting of the Minus 3 per cent project - an EU backed scheme aiming to establish shining examples for the implementation of the Energy End-use Efficiency & Energy Services Directive (2006/32/EC) in cities.

Representatives from Dublin, Graz, Malacky, Maribor and Zaragoza will join their colleagues in the city tomorrow Thursday, March 11 and Friday, March 12.

The partners will be welcomed by the Mayor and senior representatives from the council tomorrow morning.

The project's European partners are: the City of Derry & Northern Ireland Energy Agency; the City of Dublin & City of Dublin Energy Management Agency (CODEMA); the City of Graz representing Austria & Graz Energy Agency (GEA); the Municipality of Malacky representing Slovakia & Energy Centre Bratislava (ECB); the Municipality of Maribor representing Slovenia & Energy Agency of Podravje (ENERGAP); Europe Innovation & Development (EID) representing Spain.

Minus 3 per cent is a three year project funded by the European Commission, through the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme.

The participating cities will show that it is possible to save 3 per cent of the City Authority's own energy consumption per year. The energy reduction targets are long term to reach minus 30 per cent by 2020, and each city will have a different year-by-year result to meet this target.
