City Mission anniversary

A FORMER Superintendent of the Londonderry City Mission, Rev Dr Frederick Munce, made a welcome return to the City on Sunday March 6, for the 117th anniversary of the Londonderry City Mission’s work in Londonderry.

Sentinel readers will be conversant with the sterling work which is carried out in the Men’s Hostel at McCraw Chambers, Crawford Square, by the City Mission, under the manager Sean Boyle and his dedicated staff.

Sunday was also the 10th Anniversary of the opening of the new Clooney Hall Methodist Church which, together with a Mission Centre, is incorporated in the building known as Clooney Hall on Clooney Terrace. This is the third Clooney Hall Methodist Church to stand on this site - the first having been built in 1862.

The special services on Sunday were well attended not only by Methodist people from the two local and surrounding Methodist Churches, but also by representatives from other religious denominations and civic and community life within the City. Both services were conducted by the present Superintendent and Minister of Clooney Hall Methodist Church, Rev Peter Murray, and Rev Dr Frederick Munce was the guest preacher. Rev Dr Munch is presently Minister at Belfast South Methodist Church.

He was the Superintendent of Londonderry City mission when the new building was constructed, and he received a very warm welcome on his return to the City. Special music arrangements were offered by the choir for the occasion and the organist was Miss Jane Given.
