City parking for one pound

Councillors have welcomed a six month pilot scheme that starts tomorrow (Saturday) where motorists will be able to park in a public car park in the city for up to five hours for just one pound.

This is the latest initiative by the Minister for Regional Development Danny Kennedy designed to save public money and attract more people into town centres.

Alderman Allan Ewart, Chairman of the Council’s Economic Development Committee said: “When the cost reductions were implemented in the run up to Christmas our local retailers noticed an increase in customers and I expect the same trend over the next six months,” he said.

Councillor Alexander Redpath said: “I warmly welcome the announcement by the Minister that parking charges across DRD off-street car parks will be slashed.”

Councillor Pat Catney described it as a small step, but said that ‘there was still a long way to go.’

The car parks that these new fees will apply at, from Saturday, include: Linenhall Street, Laganbank Road, Smithfield Square, Barrack Street, Queens Road, Antrim Street, Governors Road and Longstone Street Roundabout.
