City residential will tackle suicide

LONDONDERRY charity Men’s Action Network (MAN) is holding a free residential to allow people who have experienced suicidal feelings to come and talk and share their experiences.

MAN as a charity supports and promotes male health and wellbeing and has for many years created safe spaces to talk with, hear, and support men in such crisis.

In addition to the professional counselling service currently on offer the charity is now seeking to develop a tier of support where men can come together as a group to break isolation and share and support each other around common experiences of feeling suicidal.

According to Director of Services and Development Michael Lynch: “We would particularly like to hear from men who would have gone through a suicidal experience in the past and who now feel they have overcome or managed their experience to a point were they are no longer suicidal and may feel able to share their own experiences within a core group, facilitated by MAN, which would meet initially once a month to help and support other men going through similar experiences.

“If you are a man over 18 who is open to the idea of helping in this way you are invited to take part in a two day weekend residential on Friday and Saturday 21st and 22nd Oct 2011 in the Waterfoot Hotel where together we aim to explore how we might use our collective experiences and expertise to take this process forward.”

The residential will be facilitated by professional counsellors and will support participants to share their experiences; look at what helped or was and a barrier to seeking help; explore the next steps in the development of the support group

The residential is funded by ESB ElectricAid Ireland under their suicide prevention program and is free for all participants, including meals and overnight accommodation. It begins with registration on Friday at 6.30pm and ends after dinner on Saturday at 8.00pm.
