City schools oversubscribed by 174

In the current academic year Foyle and Londonderry College (11 pupils), Lumen Christi (99 pupils), Thornhill College (30 pupils) and St Columb’s College (34 pupils) were collectively oversubscribed by 174 pupils.

That’s almost identical to the 173 oversubscription figure for 2013/14, when Foyle and Londonderry (23), Lumen Christi (70), Thornhill (56) and St Columb’s (24) were the schools affected.

In 2012/13 Foyle and Londonderry (19) and Lumen Christi (106) were the only schools listed as affected with the total oversubscription figure at 125.

North Down MLA Steven Agnew asked the Minister of Education, John O’Dowd, for a breakdown of the last three years of oversubscribed first preference places in both Catholic post-primary secondary schools and controlled post-primary secondary schools across the whole of Northern Ireland.

The approved admission numbers for the local schools were outweighed by the number of first preference applications over the past three years.

The approved admissions number at Foyle and Londonderry and Lumen Christi was 120; whilst at Thornhill College it stood at 200; and at St Columb’s College it stood at 220.
