City to handle ‘hot potatoes’

Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Community Relations Section are organising an interactive half day conference to give local community representatives with the opportunity to discuss some of the difficult good relations issues in Northern Ireland.

Entitled “Hot Potatoes”, the Conference will take place in the ‘Tower Hotel’ from 10am to 2pm on Wednesday, September 30.

It will discuss a wide range of controversial or ‘hot potato’ issues such as policing, refugees and asylum seekers, gender identity, dealing with the past, minority groups and parading.

The conference is being organised as part of this year’s Community Relations and Cultural Relations Week with support from Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Good Relations Programme – CRU, OFMDFM. It is aimed at community workers, youth workers, volunteers and those interested in increasing their awareness of local issues and who are keen to improve good relations in their daily lives.

Encouraging people to register for the conference, Sue Divin, community relations officer with Derry City and Strabane District Council said the event provides a great opportunity for the community and voluntary sector to meet in an informal setting and talk about some of the many difficult but very real issues facing people living and working in Northern Ireland.

Registration for the conference must be done in advance. Refreshments will be served on the day. To register contact niamh.scullion@derrycityandstrabanedistrict.com. Tel: 02871253253 ext 8225.
