"The Banks of the Foyle Hallowe'en Carnival has evolved from the spirit of the people from this wonderful city.

"Every year, the city attracts visitors from all over the world to experience this spirit and the unique atmosphere it generates.

"With hotels and B&B's at high capacity over the weekend, it is also set to provide a much needed financial boost for the city.

"I would encourage the public to enjoy the festivities safely and sensibly and encourage parents to know the whereabouts of their children at all times.

"Its important that we can all enjoy this festival in a safe manner and I would encourage people to adhere to the Carnival Care message.

"I would also like to wish everyone involved in organising the event the very best and look forward to welcoming both locals and visitors to the city centre this weekend."

The festival kicked off yesterday with a series of city centre events and continues throughout the weekend with a range of activities for everyone including a Mexican Day of the Dead show and an interactive Pig show, as well as storytelling at the Guildhall; Whizzer Witches performances and flying bats in the Guildhall Square and a Halloween party at the Old Clondermott School. Saturday will also see the Walled City Market taking a Halloween theme.

The festival weekend will come to a magical conclusion on Sunday evening with a "Carnival of Light" parade followed by a spectacular riverside fireworks display, taking place this year at the earlier time of 7.00pm, lighting up the night sky in a riot of colours visible from miles around.
