Civic Centre hosts ‘Carson’s Army’ centenary event

A Service of Thanksgiving was held at Craigavon Civic Centre to mark the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Ulster Volunteer Force in 1913.

Mayor Carla Lockhart, speaking at the event to mark the anniversary of ‘Carson’s Army’ said: “These men were brave, courageous and valiant and undoubtedly played a key role in securing the constitutional positioning of our country within the United Kingdom.

“The celebration was a very fitting way to commemorate these men who later went on to form the 36th Ulster Division who fought with great valour at the Battle of the Somme.

“This was an excellent service with Mr David Martin bringing an excellent historical account of those days, Roy Dreaning leading, singing and most importantly bring the word of God to the gathering, Quincey Dougan for reading a poem, Lexi Davidson for reading the UVF of 1913’s prayer, and Newmills Male Voice Choir for singing.

“I too addressed the gathering placing on record my thanks to our forefathers who took their stand for what was right and proper.”

DUP Councillor Mark Baxter said: “Very fitting tributes were paid to these Ulstermen who formed the 36th Ulster division many of whom fell at the Somme on 1/7/1916. Their bravery must never be forgotten.”
