Civic Centre name up for debate

RATEPAYERS around the Limavady borough should soon know what the town's new multi-million pound civic centre will be called.

Council initially looked to the public to come up with a name for the state-of-the-art facility on Main Street. Some of the dozens of suggestions included Eros, Benview, Broighter, Danny Boy, Leap of the Dog and Limavady Town Hall and O'Hampsey.

Those entries have been whittled down to just a handful to be discussed by councillors at the monthly meeting on Thursday.

"Of the names which were put forward to Council five have been selected for further discussion," said a spokesperson.

"I can't say what the outcome of the discussion will be or on whether Council would decide to go back out to the local community with a short list of names. A decision on the name would have to be taken fairly soon to allow for it to be incorporated in publicity materials, signage etc."

In the meantime, work on the huge project continues on schedule despite the cruellest cold snap in almost 30 years.

"No, the cold snap has not delayed work on the new civic centre. The contractors have obviously been off over Christmas and the New Year. They came back on site on Monday, January 4," said the spokesperson.

"They have been working away, both inside and outside the building. We will have a better idea after the next site meeting. We are unaware of any significant delays to the project due to the weather and still anticipate a completion date in April."
