DUP group leader Cllr Carla Lockhart said she is “delighted” that the Notice of Motion was passed unanimously to host a civic reception for Mr Frampton and his family following his win at the Manchester Arena against Scott Quigg.

Cllr Lockhart said, “I am pleased that this notice of motion united the council chamber and political groupings.

“To see Carl recognised in his manner is very fitting and I am personally looking forward to meeting him and his family.

“He has been a great ambassador for the area and for Northern Ireland.

“I have utmost respect and admiration for his achievements to date and know that there are greater things ahead. His work amongst young boxers is also very notable and commendable and I look forward to congratulating him in person.”

Mr Frampton currently lives in the Banbridge area.

Frampton took the WBA super-bantamweight title after a split points decision against former champion Scott Quigg in Manchester last month and kept his own IBF super-bantamweight belt in a unification fight.

Another sporting name to be honoured is former Portadown Football Club manager Ronnie McFall who is to be the first person to receive the new supercouncil’s Freedom of the Borough and a civic reception.
