Mr Clarke visited the charity this week to see first-hand the great work that this Service provides.

“I met with a guide dog called Maurice, who took me for a blindfolded walk, which was quite an experience. We just don’t realise the struggle that those who are blind, face on a daily basis and this experience helped me understand their difficulties and challenges,” Mr Clarke said.

He added: “I also met Lisa, a guide dog user who told her life changing story of going blind overnight.

“This was a massive life change for her, but with her guide dog she is able to get around much easier and always has a companion at her side.

“We always hear of rehabilitation, yet we never hear of people having to habilitate, which unfortunately is becoming more common, therefore I would like to work with the charity to make it a statutory provision for habilitation, for those who require the service in Northern Ireland.”

Mr Clarke added: “We have to wonder if we had a family member who went blind, who would be there to help? If it wasn’t for charities like Guide Dogs NI those individuals would unfortunately have to be cared for, so having a companion like Maurice gives them their freedom and independence, which is what everyone wants.

“I look forward to working with Guide Dogs NI in the future and if anyone who would like more information about the Charity, please do not hesitate to contact my office on 028 9446 3273.”
