Claudy tiny tots to star on TV

SOME of the smallest pupils at Cumber Claudy Primary School have made a living, lasting contribution to the Londonderry landscape by planting trees at the Woodland Trust's Burntollet Wood- and some have been captured on film for TV.

Among the youngest ever tree planters to visit Burntollet, the P1 and P2 pupils from Cumber Claudy were joined by Scoil Naomh Brid from Muff, County Donegal. They will make their television debut on Cbeebies' Sesame Tree, in the episode, 'Tree-mendous', on Thursday, December 9, at 10.40am.

Patrick Cregg, director of the Woodland Trust, said: "Hundreds of schoolchildren have taken part in tree planting events here at Burntollet over the last year. We've had several local schools plus Scoil Naomh Brid and Moyle National School visiting from Donegal, and we're continually heartened by the enthusiasm of our young people.

"We are extremely grateful to all the schools that have played a part, and are delighted that some of our youngest stars will feature on Cbeebies. It shows children - from both sides of the border - planting trees here at Burntollet Wood, learning about nature, and having fun in the process."

The planting is part of the Woodland Trust's ambitious plan to plant over 43,000 trees at Burntollet. As the young trees grow, they will buffer the nearby ancient woods within Ness Country Park, providing an extended haunt for the existing precious wildlife.

The tree planting and woodland discovery days are part of the Woodland Trust's 'More Trees, More Good' campaign, funded by Northern Ireland Environment Agency.
