Claudy wind farm may power 7k homes

A LEADING renewable energy company is inviting people from the Claudy area to have their say on a proposed new seven turbine wind turbine that it says will generate enough electricity to power 7k homes for a year.

RES is inviting local people to view and comment on its proposals for the Barr Cregg Wind Farm, Slaghtmanus Road, at an exhibition next week.

The proposal is for up to seven wind turbines in the townlands of Barr Cregg, Ballymaclanigan and Slaghtmanus - approximately 2.5 miles from Claudy, 7 miles from Londonderry and 10 miles from Limavady.

The proposed wind farm would generate 12.6 MW of clean and renewable power each year - equivalent to the annual electricity demand of around 7,000 homes. In addition, the project will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the use of a low-carbon fuel source and bring economic benefits to the local community.

The public exhibition will take place on Thursday, May 31 at Listress Primary School between 3pm and 9pm.

The exhibition will provide the public with detailed information on the environmental and technical studies which have been undertaken along with an opportunity to pose questions and comments about the project to RES representatives.

Garth McGimpsey, RES Project Manager commented: “This is an exciting project which will help not only to meet the UK’s targets for the generation of renewable energy, but will also bring significant benefits for the local community.

“We would like to invite members of the public to come along to the exhibition to find out more about the proposed wind farm.”

In addition to the exhibition, RES will be visiting residents close to the site to explain the plans, and will be sending information to community groups and organisations in the area.

Following its consultation, RES intends to submit a planning application for the wind farm. A full Environmental Statement will be submitted to the Planning Service as part of the planning application.

Garth McGimpsey added: “We are looking forward to receiving feedback on our proposals, which will help to ensure the wind farm delivers maximum benefits to the local area.”
