Clean up after chaos

ALMOST fifty schools in the Western Education and Library Board (WELB) area have been left counting the cost of the Christmas freeze with burst pipes reported throughout the district.

A spokesperson from the WELB said: “A number of schools in the Western board area have been affected by the continuing freezing temperatures, with a total of 47 schools experiencing incidents of frozen/burst pipes.

“The WELB’s emergency help line logged 108 calls between 22 December 2009 and 3 January 2010 with School Building Supervisors and Board Maintenance Officers acting quickly to stem any water flow and conduct emergency repairs.

“To date, the Board is unaware of any school unable to re-open due to water damage. The emergency helpline continues to operate for out of hours assistance. “

The Board’s transport service operates subject to extreme weather conditions. District Transport Officers are assessing local conditions and will make any decisions impacting on services accordingly.
