Clean up Carnlough River, anglers demand

THE once bountiful Carnlough River will be devoid of life unless the authorities take action immediately to clean it up, local anglers have warned.

Overgrown shrubs and trees obscure all but a few isolated spots where fishing can take place, leading John McNeill, who has been an angler on the river for over 60 years, to say he has "never seen it in worse condition".

Fellow angler Gerry Johnston added that the overgrown banks are a disincentive to buy licences. "You need a licence to fish the river, but the way it is at the minute there aren't any more than two or three spots where you can get to the water."

The anglers' plight has moved Sinn Fein spokesman in East Antrim, Oliver McMullan, to lobby Stormont Departments for a clean-up scheme.
