‘Clean up Killure eyesore’

Ulster Unionist councillor William King says the former Killure Primary School on the outskirts of Coleraine is in an ‘appauling state’.

Councillor King has been working with Coleraine Borough Council officers to locate the owner of the former country school which was sold by the NEELb back in 2002.

“This old school is situated on the main road between Coleraine and Garvagh, a road that is used by people from Mid Ulster to make their way to the North Coast.

“The rest of the properties on this road, right up to Garvagh are in great condition. And Garvagh is looking well after the investment, this is the only property along the road that is spoiling things.”

In a statement Coleraine Borough Council said:

“ Coleraine Borough Council’s Building Control Department is responsible for administration of legislation with respect to dangerous structures and dilapidated property.

“Building Control received a report that the former Killure School, Drumcroone Road, Coleraine was in a state of disrepair.

The Building Control Department investigated the report and determined, the property does not pose a danger to a member of the public lawfully using the public road or footpath or neighbouring property as defined within Dangerous Structures Legislation.

“The property at present “by reason of its ruinous or dilapidated condition”, could not be considered “seriously detrimental to the amenity of the area”.

“As such, no legal action is deemed appropriate at this time.

“However as is practice, Coleraine Borough Council’s Building Control Department identified and communicated the report and its concerns to the owner.

As an outcome of this, the owner has agreed to carry out remedial works to improve the visual amenity of the premises and better secure the property.

“Implementation of the remedial works are currently being organised by the owner. Building Control have logged the report and will continue to monitor the property for the foreseeable future,” the statement added.
