Clipper festivalwill be bigger than ever before

The new Mayor, Alderman Hilary McClintock, says the Clipper festival next month will be bigger and better than ever prior to heading to New York to see the Londonderry yacht off in her first major diplomatic mission on behalf of the city.

She said: “I’m delighted to say that in a week, on June 15, I’m heading out to New York with a delegation from the Council to see the Clipper leaving New York so that is absolutely a great honour.

“Clipper is going to be bigger and better, the whole festival is going to be bigger and better than it has ever been before. This is the fourth year and they really want to go out with a bang this year. Hopefully, it may not be the end of it, but it is the end of the present sponsorship,” said the new Mayor, who began her term in office on Monday night.

The DUP Alderman said the maritime festival, which will run from July 9 to 17 will be another chance for Londonderry to show itself off in the best possible light.

“This city knows how to do festivals and I think there’s always such a buzz,” said the Mayor.

“There’s nothing better for community relations because we are all in there enjoying ourselves. We are not thinking about differences or whatever during these festival times and bringing in tourism to the city,” said Mrs McClintock.

The last time the festival was here, in 2014, it generated £3,183,208 for the local economy.
