Cllr Ian Stevenson says Paisley will be greatly missed

HE saidHe was a faithful moderator of the Free Presbyterian Church whose easter conventions at the Martyrs Memorial I remember fondly. He led many souls to the Saviour he loved and trusted, people who in turn went forth and led others to Christ both here and in far off fields, which to me in the eyes of eternity is what matters most. He helped establish many people in their political career. He was a caring man with a warm sense of humour and a deep faith. I have memories of this humour when as a young boy he was told I was named after him to which he replied “ commiserations son, its a horrible name”.

“It was towards the end of his career that I started to know him as a person and treasure greatly the timely advice support and encouragement he gave to me just three years ago which I will always remember into the future. History will record him as a colossus of politics in this island and a true ulsterman. I grew up through the height of his career and he only ever inspired me for good.

“While he will be greatly missed by me and those close to me he is at peace. God blessed him with the long life he had planned for him here on earth and he is now rejoicing in heaven. Many books have his signature verses of ephesians 6 v19/20, a prayer which I believe was well answered. I am reminded of two things at this time. One is the oft repeated saying “I have only one life, twill soon be past, it’s only what’s done for Jesus will last” and the hymn he sang with gusto at the end of the easter convention which said “God be with you till we meet again”. My heartfelt prayer goes out to his entire family circle at this time.”
