Clooney Road safety action sought '˜before there's a fatality'

It follows a series of accidents on the route which carries thousands of motorists daily.

Independent Unionist Councillor Maurice Devenney has taken up the problem with the roads authority in response to a strong lobby from commuters.

Mr Devenney said: “I have been inundated from drivers who use the A2 Clooney Road about the stretch at the roundabouts between Gransha and Maydown, especially the bit from Judges Road to Maydown.

“I met with TransporNI a number of months ago about faded lines, crossings etc and also mentioned the number of accidents . They said they were going to do some investigating about it.”

Mr Devenney said that in one recent occasion a vehicle ended up the hedge and that he had witnessed two incidents in the past six weeks on the route.

During his visit to the location this week, he was shocked at the number of bumpers and broken parts from vehicles which he believes were involved in road traffic collisions. With wintry conditions anticipated, he added: “Something needs to be done now before there is a fatality. This is the main road to the Limavady area.”

A spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure said recent collisions on the A2 Clooney Road are under investigation along with the longer term accident history of the road.

“When this is complete we will bring forward a number of initiatives to target improving safety, particularly on that section between Gransha and Maydown roundabouts,” added the spokesperson.

“Measures are likely to include reviewing the cross over junctions and road markings on the road and further enhancements to the warning signs.”
