Clooney Terrace shops get share of £268k improvements funding

A total of 16 outlets, including a number on Strand Road, are covered by the initiative which is due to be completed before the end of March 2017.

Announcing the financial support, Communities Minister Paul Givan said: “This funding will help to improve the appearance of the shop fronts in these two key commercial streets and complements my department’s earlier investments to enhance the public realm in the area.

“The improvements will attract more shoppers to the streets, bringing a boost to trade and increasing the vibrancy of the area.”

The Department for Communities has worked with Derry City and Strabane District Council and the City Centre Initiative to develop the ReStore scheme which aims to improve and provide some uniformity to shop frontage appearances within the area.

The minister added: “I will continue to work in partnership with the council and other key stakeholders to identify and deliver initiatives which will contribute to the further regeneration of the city.”

Work includes the installation of new shop frontages, painting, replacement of rainwater goods, and repairing or replacement of windows, doors and external plasterwork.

The project is being managed by the council in partnership with the City Centre Initiative.

The Mayor, Alderman Hilary McClintock said; “This funding will have a significant impact on businesses in both the Waterside and Cityside areas of Londonderry. At a time when a lot of businesses face economic challenges these improvements will assist in transforming some of the city’s busiest areas and encourage other property owners to maintain the general upkeep of our commercial premises.

“The ReStore scheme is an excellent initiative that demonstrates the ongoing commitment to supporting local businesses offered by a range of local partners.”
