Cloughmills Celebrate the European Day of Intergenerational solidarity

THE second European Day of Solidarity between Generations took place on Thursday last.

All across the European Union events were organised around the theme of intergenerational solidarity. To mark this occasion, Ballymoney Community Safety Partnership and Cloughmills Community Action Team hosted a planting event at the 'Grow Your Own' garden adjacent to the Corner House Bar, Cloughmills.

Alderman Frank Campbell, Mayor of Ballymoney, said: "Ageing is not something to be afraid of if we recognise the enormous contribution that the ageing population can make to our communities. We welcome the European Day of Solidarity between Generations as an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of what older people have to offer and to promote better relations and solidarity between all generations."

Patrick Frew, Cloughmills Community Action Team, commented that: "the 'Grow Your Own project is an excellent example of intergenerational working. People from of all ages within the village are coming forward to help in the garden, sharing their talents and resources".

Cathy Watson, Community Safety Manger believes "these types of programs promote the transmission of traditions and values from older to younger generations, helping to enhance communication skills, promote self-esteem, develop problem-solving abilities, and foster friendships across generations. Intergenerational work brings together diverse groups and helps dispel inaccurate stereotypes which in turn encourages tolerance – all of which help improve the quality of life for everyone in the community."
