Cloughmills Community Orchard Planting

On Saturday Cloughmills is holding its first Community Orchard Planting Day from 12noon to 2.30pm. Under Incredible Edible Cloughmills the village is looking for as many participants as possible to help with the planting.

An orchard is being planted at Patton’s Bar along with a hedgerow of native fruiting trees at the junction of Ballycregagh and Drumbare Roads. In towns, villages and neighbourhoods, native trees add colour, landscape interest, absorb noise pollution, improve air quality and can help alleviate local flooding.

Patrick Frew from the Cloughmills Community Action Team said; “This will be a really fun event for all ages so please bring the family along to learn about our native trees and to plant an orchard that will provide fruit and colour for the future in Cloughmills. We are very grateful to Denis Moore of Patton’s for his support in making the Community Orchard possible and also to the Woodland Trust for providing the trees”.

Community woodland creation is a richly rewarding activity that can bring everyone together to do something positive, lasting and fun in the spaces we share. Whether it’s the creation of a new community woodland or orchard, or hedges and copses being planted around buildings or allotments, working together is a good way to share the workload and multiply the enjoyment! Refreshments will be provided afterwards in Patton’s Barn.
