Club of Research meet

THE ABOD Club of Research met in the memorial hall on Saturday, to elect incoming officers.

The Club is the Historical Society of the Apprentice Boys Association and is open to all members of the Association. The Charter was granted by General Committee in 1990 after representations where made from the required 13 members, the most notable being Samuel Sheppard the then Governor, who led the request and is still an active supporter of the Club today.

It’s primary purpose is to research and investigate the events surrounding the Siege of Derry, the Apprentice Boys Association and other points of interest relating to this period of history. This does not exclude other events in our country’s history that may be of interest, for instance the Club meeting at the beginning of June was held in Antrim under the auspicious of Muckamore Campsie Branch Club which included a walking tour of the town retracing the events of the United Irishmen in June 1798.

Members of the Club of Research meet four times a year in various locations, with three meetings being held in the Spring and one in the Autumn.

The March meeting is held in either England or Scotland to facilitate members living in those jurisdictions and is held over a weekend with wives, friends and guests taking part, and this year’s visit was to Motherwell, hosted by Motherwell Walker Branch Club and in support of the Scottish Amalgamated Committee public open day in the town. This event was a resounding success in 2012 Club members will be visiting Edinburgh.

Any Brother who is in good standing with his own Branch Club can apply for membership. There are 71 members on the books, drawn from Parent and Branch Clubs from across the British Isles.

In addition to their meeting in the Apprentice Boys of Derry Memorial Hall on Saturday, the members also visited the Mayor, Alderman Maurice Devenney, in the Guildhall.
