Club ‘watching the birdie’ for two decades

It’s been quite a start to the new season for Ballymena Birdwatchers’ Club as members celebrated their 20th anniversary in September.

Their annual dinner followed on October 10 and the months to come feature an exciting range of talks and field trips.

If you have an interest and/or a passion for our feathered friends then you may like to join them at their next meeting on November 3 when speaker Mervyn Gurthrie will talk on ‘Wild Scotland - Wildlife Photographic Adventures’

Their next gathering be on December 1 when Gareth Bareham will talk on ‘The Birds of Lough Neagh and Recent Trends in Waterfowl Populations’.

Meetings in the New Year will cover subjects including ‘Australia’s Wet Tropics’ and ‘Hedgerow Management & Farmland Birds’.

The Club will also be embarking on various field trips, the next of which will be to County Durham in November.

Founded in October 1995, the Ballymena Birdwatchers Club was the idea of a group of enthusiasts who set up a local group based on the format of monthly indoor talks and monthly field trips running from September to June.

The club also has a policy to promote conservation of bird species and habitats in Northern Ireland and a very successful tern breeding platform was erected in Lough Beg with funding from the Lough Neagh Partnership.
