This will be the fifth year that Gordon Bell has sold his homegrown produce in the weekly market in aid of the Cardiac Trust in the Belfast Health Trust.

In 2009 he had a lifesaving operation to correct a cardiac problem and in an effort to give something back he began growing veg on a small one-acre plot just outside Cookstown.

“I was very grateful to all the staff at the hospital who saved my life,” he told the Mail. “I wanted to give something back and this is my way of doing that.

“My veg stall is coming back to Cookstown in July, but I am still selling potatoes through the Nearbuy shop in Coagh. My thanks go to Joan Harkness and the staff there for all their help.”

The Finance Director of the Cardiac Trust in Belfast said: “Donations such as these allow us to provide services, buy equipment, and undertake research which would otherwise not be available through public funds.”
