Coalisland man fined for possession of cannabis

A 21-year-old man has appeared before Dungannon Magistrates after police attending an incident in Coalisland found two small packets of cannabis when they searched him.

Paul Joseph Hughes from Canal Place, Coalisland was interviewed after the police search and made a full admission to having the Class B drug.

At East Tyrone Magistrates Court, a defence solicitor said the amount recovered was very small and his client was fully co-operative at the scene and during interview.

It was also stated that Hughes sought assistance from his GP who referred him for addiction treatment in which he is engaging well.

District Judge John Meehan noted that the defendant has a previous caution on record for a similar offence, adding: “He’s done the caution and will by today have done the fine.

“Should he return to court there will be a more serious penalty.”

Hughes was fined £100.
