East Tyrone Magistrates Court heard how police were on patrol in a Dungannon car park on March 26 when they spoke to Christopher McElroy from Bracken Court, Coalisland who was in a vehicle.

An odour of cannabis was noted and McElroy handed over a small package. He said he understood it was illegal to possess it and that it was for his own personal use.

The defence said his client co-operated fully with police, but acknowledged that he had two cautions for cannabis and a record for burglary.

Judge Meehan said: “He is not grasping the fact a significant record is being accumulated.”

McElroy was handed 100 hours community service for the offence.
