Coalisland teenager Ronan Hughes’ tragic death raised with Irish senator

An Irish senator who is bringing an internet safety bill through the Republic’s Seanad, has expressed her sympathy on the tragic death of Coalisland teenager Ronan Hughes.

Mid Ulster SDLP representatives met with the Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Senator Loraine Higgins.

Dungannon Councillor Denise Mullan discussed with Senator Higgins the death of the teenager which shocked the country and the internet safety bill introduced by the Senator currently going through the Seanad.

“Senator Higgins was very sympathetic to the tragedy that befell Ronan Hughes last month,” said councillor Mullen.

Politicians in the North should take note on the steps that are being taken in Dublin to protect young people from the dangers of the internet and see what can be learned.”

Cllr Mullen added: “On the topic of state collusion with paramilitaries during the Troubles, we welcome that the Taoiseach has adopted the policy of full disclosure.

“He reaffirmed his commitment to uncover truth for victims and survivors and I hope that the British Government will commit to the same policy sooner rather than later.”
