Coastguard training exercise at Causeway

COASTGUARD Rescue Officers from Coleraine have taken part in a training exercise with National Trust Staff at the Giant's Causeway.

Before the training began, Station Officer Stuart Leslie gave the Trust Staff an introduction to Coastguard procedures.

The exercise itself involved the use of throwing lines to recover a casualty from the sea followed by a series of realistic first aid scenarios with the casualties being played by Coastguard volunteers. The exercise culminated in the full scale recovery of a stretcher casualty - using a weighted dummy called George.

Coastguard Station Officer Chris Little said: “Although there are relatively few incidents at the Causeway, it is important that we are prepared for all eventualities.”

Head Ranger at the Causeway, Melissa Mcquitty commented: “The Coastguard do an amazing job on the North Coast and the National Trust Ranger Team at the Giant’s Causeway would like to thank them for giving up their time and expertise. The team always finds training sessions with the Coastguard extremely beneficial and great fun.”
