COI ordinations

YESTERDAY (Tuesday) saw the ordination of two new deacons for the Church of Ireland diocese of Derry and Raphoe.

The ordination service took place at 8pm in St Columba's Church in Omagh and was performed by Bishop Ken Good.

History

The two people who were ordained bring great life experience and skill to their new posts. Not only that but history was made. Lorraine Capper (ne Megarrell) was ordained for the parish of Drumragh in Omagh.

She is the sister of Rev Joanne Megarrell and wife of Rev Alan Capper. Not only is Lorraine married to the Rector of Holy Trinity, Lisnaskea; she and her sister, Joanne, (Curate Assistant of St John's, Moira) have become the first two sisters to be ordained within the Church of Ireland.

Lorraine and Joanne grew up in Magheralin Parish. Before ordination both sisters had an interest in education: Lorraine taught Religious Education in England and then was a Librarian in Enniskillen Collegiate, whilst Joanne taught German and English in Limavady.

There is also a Limavady connection with the other person ordained on Tuesday evening. Jason Kernohan was ordained for the parish of Drumachose in Limavady. He is originally from Ballymena. Jason has a background in the music and entertainment industry in Northern Ireland. He is looking forward to living in a new part of the country and getting involved in the life of his new parish.
