Coleraine DPP publishes 2010 public survey results

COLERAINE District Policing Partnership (DPP) has published the local results from the February 2010 District Policing Partnership (DPP) Public Consultation Survey, which was circulated to 74,000 households across Northern Ireland.

The survey was conducted by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency’s (NISRA) Central Survey Unit and asked householders, among other things, to prioritise the local policing issues that concern them most.

The local results from the 604 respondents in the Coleraine Borough will be used by the DPP to establish local policing priorities and set objectives for the PSNI through the Local Policing Plan.

Speaking about the results, Chair of Coleraine DPP, Councillor Robert McPherson: said: “I would like to thank everyone who took the time to complete this survey. DPPs act as a platform for communities to have a say on how their local area should be policed and to help ensure communities get the kind of policing service they need and want.

“This kind of consultation is one of the ways we gather information about policing issues from the people in our communities and how we go about setting objectives to help shape policing in the Coleraine area.

“The biggest policing concerns of people in this area are anti-social behaviour (81%), burglary (63%), road traffic offences (61%), drug dealing and drug use/abuse (57%) and violent crime (39%).”

Looking at the results relating to the DPP, Councillor McPherson said: “Most respondents (74%) had heard of the DPP and 67% of them were prepared to contact us regarding local policing which is encouraging for members as we continue to engage with local people and the police to prevent crime and make communities safer.

“We know local people want to access a good policing service; and there is definitely more work to be done in encouraging local people to work with the police to tackle crime. We all have a role in helping to make our community safer and we will continue to work in partnership with the police and other key stakeholders to achieve this.”
