Coleraine Museum celebrates life and career of Sam Henry

Henry, (1878- 1952) was a well respected and vibrant member of the Coleraine community who was actively involved in the church, local clubs and societies.

He also served as a councillor for many years and lectured across Northern Ireland.

To this day, he is widely recognised for his work as editor of the weekly series, ‘Songs of the People’, which ran between 1923 and 1939, and his ‘Trim Little Borough’ series, published in 1929.

The incredibly popular and long-running ‘Songs of the People’ printed well-known songs traditionally played and sung by the people of Northern Ireland. Henry was not only the instigator of the series; he also collected a vast majority of the songs.

Sarah Carson, Coleraine Museum’s Collections Access Officer said: “Coleraine Museum is delighted to showcase the life and work of Sam Henry, I would like to thank the Craig family for granting us access to such a remarkable collection which provides a unique insight into the places and people of Ulster.

“I strongly encourage the residents of the Borough and beyond to come along and enjoy Sam’s fantastic photographs which chronicle his appreciation for the local landscape.”

The exhibition will run at Coleraine Town Hall from this Thursday to Saturday, March 5. Admission free.
