Derek, whose roots are in County Cork, told members something about his career in agriculture, and banking from which he took early retirement in 1995.

Since 1998 he has worked with the Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke Association as regional co-ordinator.

The idea for The Big Dander came about to highlight the first World Heart Day. Derek went into training to ensure he would be fit to walk the 25 miles a day for four days. There was no cheating on the walk which left Mizen Head on September 5th and finished on 24th September - even though Derek was offered a lift from a farmer who said: “Sure who would know?”

After answering questions from members, ex-President Dermot Jennings proposed the vote of thanks. The vote of thanks was duly passed on by the President.
