Coleraine Rotarians focus on the crocus

ROTARIANS in Coleraine have taken the first steps towards celebrating Rotary Day in February next year.

Last Sunday morning saw volunteers from Coleraine Rotary Club working hard at Christie Park in the town, planting more than 5,000 crocus bulbs as part of the international ‘Focus on the Crocus’ campaign, organised by Rotary International. The bulbs should flower towards the end of February.

Club president, Martin Dinsmore said: “As we look forward to celebrating Rotary Day on February 23, ‘Focus on the Crocus’ is a healthy, fun, community based, environmentally friendly way to plant in everyone's mind the opportunity of being part of a historic worldwide campaign, spearheaded by Rotary International, to finally eradicate Polio across the world ... and it is a great excuse to get outdoors on a lovely autumn morning and generally enjoy the life we are giving others.”

Planting took place in the area of the Rotary Garden at Christie Park , right on the banks of the River Bann and thanks go to Coleraine Borough Council for their assistance in preparing the ground for planting.

The club members planted Ruby Giant ‘purple' crocus representing the dye colour dabbed on children's little ‘pinkie' finger to indicate they have been immunised against polio in the Rotary International campaign against Polio, commenced in 1985.
