Coleraine students learn about recycling

FOR upper sixth pupils from North Coast Integrated College, Coleraine, the classroom took on a very different look, with a site visit to one of Northern Ireland’s most advanced materials recovery facilities.

The pupils travelled to RiverRidge Recycling in Ringsend where they learnt first-hand about waste management, the impact waste has on the environment and more importantly how easy it is for them to reduce their impact on the environment by reusing and recycling their waste.

Following a short introduction to Northern Ireland’s waste strategy the young men and women donned their high visibility jackets and were able to see the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in action. The MRF sorts materials collected from businesses, households and schools across the North West and segregates the high value products found in our waste streams for recycling or reuse.

Brett Ross, Managing Director, RiverRidge Recycling said, “We were delighted to welcome the pupils from North Coast Integrated College to the site.

“It is important that everyone, young or old, understand the impact of waste on today’s society. We can no longer divert all our waste to landfill. It is important that we reduce the impact we have on the environment and I would urge all schools in the area to learn how they can reduce the amount of waste tolandfill.”

RiverRidge Recycling state of the art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is able to segregate high value products found in our waste streams for recycling or reuse.

Angela Passmore, Science Teacher at North Coast Integrated School, said, “The pupils thoroughly enjoyed their visit to RiverRidge Recycling, as did I. Understanding the issues of waste and the management of waste in a hands on manner brought the topic to life.

“The students are currently studying recycling for their Applied Science ‘A’ level. Being able to see and experience the materials recovery facility in real life is a great way to enhance the lessons we are teaching about reducing, reusing and recycling in the classroom.”
