Coleraine to celebrate Armed Forces Day

COLERAINE Borough Council is to mark Armed Forces Day, on Saturday, June 26.

The day gives members of the public an opportunity to show their support for the men and women who make up our armed forces.

As part of the celebration, Council will fly the Armed Forces flag from Cloonavin, however DUP councillor Adrian McQuillan proposed that a second flag should be flown from the Town Hall.

UUP councillor Norman Hillis seconded his proposal saying: “We should be very proud of our forces.

“We should also think of the families of those serving.”

DUP councillor Timothy Deans agreed, and said that the ‘whole community’ should get involved with the day.”

Alderman James McClure added: “We have all watched the town in England, Wootton Bassett, the people there show their respects for fallen soldiers. This is an opportunity for us to show our respects to local soldiers who fight to keep this country free.”

The proposal was carried, however Sinn Fein councillor Billy Leonard asked for his vote against the proposal to be recorded.
