Collections a success for Christian Aid

Christian Aid have noted a ‘generous response’ from the people of Carrickfergus during a series of charity collections last weekend.

Collectors from First Carrickfergus Presbyterian and Joymount Presbyterian Churches had an successful day in the De Courcy Centre last Saturday, collecting total donations of £300 from passersby.

Christian Aid voluntary organiser for Carrick, Maureen McClune, said: “In our house to house collections, as usual, we were met with friendliness and generosity, which is an enormous encouragement to collectors.

“We are so fortunate to have faithful collectors year after year - some have been volunteering for over 30 years now and these good folk make their team co-ordinator’s task a pleasure.

“It’s great news that five more churches have now joined us, making a total of 11 participating churches in Carrick.

“Last year, including Gift Aid, the Carrickfergus churches raised over £10,000 and although our figures for this year aren’t yet available, early indications are that we may even have surpassed this.”

Maureen added: “I can’t imagine how awful it must be to feel hungry, or to have to tell children that there is just no food in the house, or the horror of having no home.

“There is still time to hand in a donation to any church, in an envelope marked ‘Christian Aid’ or simply ‘phone Christian Aid on 028 90 648133 to donate by card or for further details.”

Christian Aid works globally to eradicate the causes of poverty.

The charity provides urgent, practical and effective assistance where need is great, tackling the effects of poverty as well as its root causes.
