Collectors for Poppy Appeal are recognised

Lurgan and Brownlow Royal British Legion hosted their annual supper on Tuesday night to thank the many poppy collectors associated with their branch.

It was a hugely successful night with the Mayor of Craigavon Cllr Mark Baxter attending to hand out certificates and awards for their efforts.

Speaking following the thank-you supper the chairperson of the branch Mrs Roberta McNally said: “This event is an occasion for Lurgan and Brownlow RBL to say a big thank-you to our faithful poppy collectors who have travelled miles and given hours of their time to collect for our annual poppy appeal.

“We were delighted this year to see a refreshed interest in the Poppy Appeal and the fact that we are already almost meeting last year’s total figure demonstrates this renewed interest.

This is testament of the generosity of the people of Lurgan and the surrounding areas and for that we are extremely grateful.

“We also as a branch are very appreciative of the community support for the appeal and would thank the local schools, churches, community groups, youth organisations and local businesses for their support in helping raise funds and educate children and young people about the poppy appeal and the necessity of it for the families of fallen soldiers and those who come home from war injured physically and mentally.

“This year’s Remembrance Day service in our town centre was a humbling and moving occasion when over 50 wreaths were laid and thousands gathered to show their solidarity with our armed forces and the sacrifice they have and continue to pay on a daily basis.

“It certainly has been a team effort and to all involved a big thank-you from Lurgan and Brownlow RBL. We look forward to seeing an increase on last year’s total of £33,400 but without the help of the entire community this could not have been possible.”
