College students unite against hate

THE Lisburn campus of the South Eastern Regional College launched the Unite against Hate campaign within their student community during their recent Re-Freshers Week and urged students to sign up to the campaign's call.

Unite against Hate is a multi-agency campaign which highlights all six forms of hate crime including homophobia, racism, sectarianism and transphobia as well as prejudices based around a person’s faith or disability and challenges everyone in Northern Ireland to unite to stop it.

Attending the South Eastern Regional College Re-Freshers Fair, Cool FM DJ and Ambassador for Unite against Hate Pete Snodden said: “I’m delighted the SERC are endorsing the Unite against Hate campaign. We all need to embrace and respect diversity and make Northern Ireland an even better place for all of us to live.”

Keelin McGrogan, Student Affairs Officer at SERC added: “South Eastern Regional College ran a highly successful Fresher’s Fairs across our four main campuses in September 09, however we felt that the messages that we were trying to get across to our students were so important that they needed to be reinforced. In order to do this in an interactive, enjoyable way, we decided to hold Re-Fresher’s Fairs in January to coincide with Anti-bullying Week and the Unite against Hate campaign.

“At SERC we take the health, well-being, welfare and personal safety of students very seriously. This event gives us a platform to promote these different issues through our own internal support departments and partner organisations.”
