A mural depicting Carrick’s most famous landmark - the castle - was unveiled at the Scotch Quarter Home on Thursday afternoon.

Painted by local artist Gary Orr, the idea for the artwork was devised by Castleview owner Tom McCourt.

“Our residents have a sun-room out the back of the building but they prefer the lovely view of the sea and the castle from the front,” explained Jacqui McCourt, a member of the management team.

“There was previously just a blank wall there so my dad, who is the owner, suggested to Gary that he paint something to brighten the place up. All of the residents love it.”

The home already has a strong artistic ethos, with regular arts and crafts classes for residents. “A woman come over recently to teach a card-making class,” Jacqui added.

The castle itself has proved to be a recurring motif for artist Gary. “I’ve had lots of requests for oil paintings of it,” he said.

“I’ve done a lot of murals; this based on one I had painted before at the Royal Oak bar.”
