Commissioner chose city image for card

The first Commissioner for Older People in Northern Ireland, Claire Keatinge, appointed in November 2011, who was the guest of honour at the official opening of the U3A Foyle building back in May last year, contacted the organisation with a special request prior to Christmas, it has emerged.

It seems Ms Keatinge was so impressed by the artistic output of the members which were on show that day that she contacted U3A Foyle when she was looking for a picture for her first official Christmas card.

Member Laurence McGonagle’s beautiful watercolour of a family group enjoying the snow in a local park in the city was the eventual winner from over 40 submissions of paintings, drawings and photographs by members.

The Commissioner said that she wanted the card to celebrate older people’s creativity in Londonderry, which is celebrating being the first ever UK City of Culture in 2013.
