Commitment on PMS welcomed - Elliott

THE Ulster Unionist Party has welcomed the Coalition Government's commitment to the Presbyterian Mutual Society in today's Comprehensive Spending Review, something for which the Ulster Unionist Party has successfully lobbied over the last two years.

Commenting on the issue, Ulster Unionist Party Leader Tom Elliott said: “This is a huge boost to savers from the Presbyterian Mutual Society who felt helpless as they suffered the worst knock-on effect of the banking crisis in Northern Ireland. Many members, quite understandably, felt that they had been abandoned by the former Labour Government.

“The funding put forward today by the Chancellor offers hope for thousands of savers, many of whom have lost their life savings. Now those who had invested less than 20,000 will be able to retrieve more of their money than would have been possible under the previous Government. This is something for which the Ulster Unionist Party has been lobbying over the last two year and my predecessor Sir Reg Empey deserves recognition for his hard work and unswerving commitment to this issue. We thank the Coalition Government for their commitment to PMS savers.”
