Committee members had been due to meet on Monday, April 3 to reconsider their previous decision to permit the temporary reopening of the Antrim Street car park, for a maximum period of two years.

Amid concerns that the local authority could potentially face a legal challenge from other car park operators in the city, the committee has been asked to give the matter further consideration to make sure their previous ruling was the correct one.

However, given the threat of possible legal action and suggestions that councillors could end up being surcharged if they make the wrong decision, the issue has been removed from Monday’s planning schedule.

The Star understands that the item has been taken off the agenda to give members time to seek further legal advice from senior counsel.
