Ballymoney born and bred, he attended Dalriada and became a teacher. However it was while working at Portora school in Eniskillen that he started painting seriously and had a genuine depth of feeling and concern for Ballymoney. Hugh used the rugged coast of Co Antrim and Donegal for inspiration and his work can be found in many private collections throughout the whole of ireland, or as far away as Canada and the United States.

Councillor Darryl Wilson posted on Facebook: “Deeply saddened to learn that Hugh passed away. I had the pleasure of getting to know Hugh over the years as we, like many others shared a passion to see our town be uplifted and improved. We had many discussions, debates, and laughs along the way. Hugh was a family man, an innovative thinker, a free thinker, a poet, a musician and an exceptional artist. An artist who seen great potential in the world around him. Deepest sympathies go out to the entire family circle at this sad time.”
