Community Spirit still Alive in Cookstown

IN an effort to get fit & healthy for the festive season, a small group of friends challenged themselves to do a 10 mile run and while they are at it, why not raise awareness and funds for Charity!

After long consideration on which charity to choose, the group decided on St. Vincent de Paul in Cookstown. The society of St. Vincent de Paul is a worldwide, voluntary, non-profit making organization, dedicated to serving the poor, through person-to-person contact and visitation.

They offer short-term material support, friendship and guidance to those in need; however, continually strive to assist those they help to achieve self-sufficiency, and longer-term solutions.

As word about the run spread through circles of friends, interest started to grow and what was initially 3 – 4 runners has now grown to approximately 50 runners taking to the streets of Cookstown on Saturday 22nd December.

Declan Gormley, who is organising the charity run says:

“Everyone wants to get fitter & healthier for Christmas and what better motivation can you think of than raising funds for a charity that helps people in our own community. St Vincent de Paul, Cookstown is on our doorstep. The pressures that Christmas can bring on some families can be tough so this will hopefully make it a little easier for those people who need support.

Every day, there is someone new asking to take part and the more the merrier as far as we are concerned. All participants have got sponsorship forms and we expect that we will really raise awareness while making a significant contribution to St Vincent de Paul.

It is an exciting challenge but one that we are all looking forward to. If you are out and about Cookstown on 22nd Dec around lunchtime and you see us whizzing (or wheezing!) past, give us a wee wave or a toot and show us some support. That’s what we will need to get us through it!!!
