The community has been paying tribute to a Ballymoney lady who passed away on Tuesday, July 19.

Margaret Jane Anderson of Garryduff Road was a highly respected and well-liked member in the community having ran the Candy Shop beside Gillan’s pub at Church Street car park.

The confectionery and newsagent’s shop had little of the design of the now more modern stores but it was functional and enjoyed a large customer base.

Behind the shop was living accommodation and although relatively small the premises housed a world of goods and that gave it a uniqueness that many miss nowadays.

It’s popularity was also characterised by the fact that everyone knew Margaret and could have passed the time with a chat which was the hallmark of many of the old family-run business that Ballymoney had.

Margaret’s husband, Robert, would also have helped out as the shop opened long hours, however it was Margaret who was the mainstay.

She also sold newspapers including the much sought after Ireland’s Saturday Night (not in existence now). And such was the social setting in those days that many would have waited patiently on a Saturday night following the Irish League soccer games for the sports newspaper to read all about the football and all the other sport taking place.

Customers would also have enjoyed talking to Robert about how Coleraine FC had performed since he was a leading supporter and a prominent official of the Ballymoney FC Supporters’ Club raising thousands for his beloved club.

Margaret, who had a quiet demeanour, retired some years ago, however she will also be remembered for her welcoming smile.

Margaret Jane is survived by her husband Robert, and a sister of Sadie. She also had a brother William.
