Competition spoils for Sollus Dancers

MEMBERS of the Sollus School of Highland Dance in Bready travelled to the Ulster Hall in Belfast last weekend to perform in the Ulster and European Highland Dancing Festival.

The Ulster Championships, which is now entering its fourth year, is the most prestigious event in the calendar year for dancers from the province.

This year the festival in general attracted over 400 dancers with the majority coming from Scotland to compete in the Europeans and other open competitions. Adding to the International scene was a number of dancers from Canada and America.

The results for the Ulster Confined Championship for entrants aged 16 and over were the results that competitors from across the province were waiting for, as this category identifies whose dance schools wre amongst the best in Ulster.

Confined results:1, Michelle Johnston, Ballynahinch; 2, Georgina Kee, Sollus - Bready; 3, Naomi Campbell, Sollus - Bready; 4, Kathryn Stewart, Belfast; 5, Jill Thompson, Sollus - Bready; 6, Nichole Hughes, Sollus - Bready; 7, Hannah Miller, Ballynahinch and, 8, Jordan Hughes,Sollus - Bready.

Michelle Johnston from Ballynahinch was placed first for the forth year in succession, narrowly edging out Georgina Kee from Bready, to confirm her status as Ulster’s best dancer.

Naomi, Jill and Nichole eachreturned their best results at the Championships.

James Kee the groups co-ordinator speaking at the closing of the two-day event said that all the Sollus competitors did the district proud, turning out excellent performances over the two days.

He said having five dancers in the top eight of the premier grade was testimony to the hard work and commitment of all connected with the Sollus group.
