Newry and Armagh DUP Assemblyman William Irwin said the accident on the Legacorry Road, Richhill, happened on Saturday night.

He said, “This latest incident thankfully did not result in a fatality. However, seeing the damage to the hedge and tyre marks going some distance down the field does again bring home the real risks that exist at this corner.”

The sweeping bend close to the Stonebridge roundabout was the scene of a tragedy only a few weeks ago when equestrian enthusiast Shannon Weir was killed and her friend Lucy Cloughan seriously injured.

Mr Irwin said the latest accident was further cause for concern. He added, “Transport NI officials have assured me that they will be taking a close look at this junction and will be referring to accident reports from the PSNI.

“It is vital that roads officials seek to implement any improvements in a timely manner given the recent level of accidents at this point. This section is particularly dangerous given the sharpness of the bend and the way the road camber veers towards the hedge, particularly in the direction coming from Richhill towards the roundabout.

“I will continue to liaise with Transport NI officials and I would also remind motorists who use this stretch of road to exercise great care and slow off on this section especially in the winter months where the road surface can be slippery.”
